The Designer, Elise Truong
Growing up in my mothers custom dress shop in Edmonton Canada, my entire childhood life was surrounded by the art of garment making. Later on I fell in love with alternative fashions, mainly surrounding vintage fetish lingerie. The obsession of authentic corset making started after seeing the amazing resurgence of crafted corsetry and owning my own pieces from other great corset makers. In 2006, I graduated from the Fashion Design program at M.C College and proceeded to teach myself how to properly fit and sew corsets through vintage corset research and pattern reference books. Other things that make my world go round include travel, the local and international burlesque community, costume events, movie marathons, website/graphic design, my drag alter-ego (Lolly Knockoff), pin-up/fetish art, and my rabbit (Tyrion Bunnister!). I am currently a board member of the Edmonton Burlesque Festival, produce the Laced Up Cabaret and am constantly taking on new projects to help the growth of the local alternative fashion and burlesque community.
After endless hours going through countless altered patterns and working closely with women of all sizes on the fit, I launched Sweet Carousel Corsetry and moved into a private sewing studio in 2007. All the hard work has turned into what you see today. I am mainly a one-woman production creating all the samples, patterning, client orders, website coding, event coordinating and customer service. Now Sweet Carousel has grown to add sewing assistants and interns. We look forward to more growth and continue to satisfy our clientele through our service and passion for quality work. Milestones include feature articles in dozens of magazines and newspapers (such as Bizarre Magazine, Retro Lovely, Fabric Trends, Georgie Magazine, Edmonton Journal), wardrobe for Edmonton Fringe productions and independent movies (such as Adore Canada, Hollywoodland, Unlucky Charms, The Little Deputy), working with known style icons (such as Lady Gaga, Amanda Lepore, dozens of alt models), and being named The Lingerie Addict Awards "Best Corset Brand 2012" and "Best Local Designer" In Vue Weekly's Best Of Edmonton 2014 and 2015.
The Sweet Carousel studio is located along the easy-accessible Edmonton downtown 104th street Promenade. This historical warehouse district is filled with gorgeous residences, shopping, dining, and is home to the downtown city farmers market that runs Spring to Fall. Our modest private studio is located in the 100+ year old West Saddlery building where other artists and designers co-exist. The studio is in a private setting open to clients through appointments. Our shop front is our website.
